Limbo: Instant Art by Simon Faithfull

Limbo: Instant Art by contemporary artist Simon Faithfull – words Abby Watson

The art of Simon Faithfull is not about selling. Nowadays you can get an i-Phone App for almost anything you might need. Most of them are selling you stuff or services though. That so-modern-of-conditions – techno-nausea – kicks in as you contemplate the thousands of icons all shouting at you. They will all of course be very important to your life.

Simon Faithfull - Limbo for i-phones
Thankfully Limbo is a website and iPhone App from the artist Simon Faithfull and it isn’t trying to sell you pizza or convince you to buy the latest must-have trainers. You see Simon has been travelling the globe making his sketches on a clever little electronic device that records his presence at a particularly moment, somewhere on the surface of this planet.

So switch off from the constant messaging and selling that comes through your phone and tune in to something more thoughtufl and considered. It might actually help you move away from the constant buzzing and bleeping as another product is forced onto you via your smartphone. Simon has been very busy with this app as you can see from his vast collection of scetches already amassed.

To date, over 500 observational sketches have recorded what he saw in each of these places. These details of everyday life have slowly built up to record his wanderings from the end of the world to Whitechapel High Street and back. Limbo will allow us to navigate our way through these artworks and will also deliver new sketches live to the user. So if you fancy a bit more art appreciation as you brave your daily commute give it a try. Limbo can be accessed via the website, Twitter and Facebook.
