Night Engine – Funked-up and Razor Edged – A New Favourite Band

Night Engine are getting the old ‘one to watch’ treatment from the national and indie press alike. If that sets your alarm bells ringing I don’t think you need worry as this band really are worth a bit of hype.

How well they do depends on so many things but they mean what they play and do a splendid line in heavy art pop for us to savour in the meantime.

There’s all sorts of influences and flavours bubbling around in the Night Engine brew. I can hear snatches of Talking Heads and even Wire, Bowie, New Order, Shriekback and Gang of Four in there – maybe even shades of disco fuelled era Stevie Wonder. The bass lines are simply great. Proper chunky funk lines played with a glint in the eye. Along with coarse angular guitar rhythms, this gives the band an almost heavy disco feel. It’s of course still very much in the indie / alternative fold but great to hear a bit of funk driving this new band. There some nice synth touches too which again takes it away from your usual indie fayre. The vocal stand out – this has an interesting warbling tone a million miles away from the terrace stomp sing-along style of those blokey indie bands of the nineties and noughties.

Their latest release is their double A side single ‘Give Me A Chance’ and ‘Young and Carefree’. This will give you a flavour of their heady hook laden groove. You can watch and listen to ‘Young and Carefree’ here. The video is nothing to write home about but the track, well have a listen for yourself. We like it much.
