Baartmans and Siegel AW15 at London Collections Men

by Charly Suggett

Here’s something to warm your cockles.

Imagine the nostalgic Ski active-wear of the previous decade of the European holiday makers and bring that together with the harsh and brutal Dutch Gabber dance scene and you’ve got yourself a collection. A Baartmans and Siegel menswear outerwear and casual collection to be exact, with a special showcase of their new and highly anticipated capsule womenswear collection.

Trademark tailored joggers in finely spun wools were livened up with vertical grosgrain ribbons in Cardinal Reds, mustards, admiral blues and parakeet greens of sentimental flags against the vertical stripes of the outerwear pieces. Said outerwear enjoyed more trademark Baartmans pieces such as the ¾ parka coat along with feather down jackets, open to reveal zipped up sportswear inspired jackets and button down shirts in plaid. The sportswear approach was balanced by box fresh Le Coq Sportif footwear, referencing the retro and sporty aesthetic and paying heed to the designers’ self description as ‘Modern Traditionalists’.

Durability and versatility also played a key feature in the design of the collection as performance enhancing fabric inserts appear on waffle knit jumpers and winter draft excluding neoprene and fur lines jackets dominated.

Now onto the ladies. The partnership with the legendary Danish company Kopenhagen Fur led to the creation of many desirable pieces such a striped stoles in blues and blacks as well as exaggerated Russian hats avec ear flaps and attention grabbing long fur coats, a glamorous perpendicular to the sporty and durable theme running throughout, still very warm though!

If you didn’t already love the collection enough (there are plenty of non-fur pieces to enjoy), another main aspect of the brand is the respectably sourced fabrics and furs, Italian development and colouring before the English construction.
