Launched in 1969, adidas Originals are re-launching their legendary Superstar basketball trainer.
The adidas Superstar was the first all-leather low top basketball shoe and one of the first to utilize the ‘herringbone’ outsole. The non-marking sole teamed with the sleek new low cut design gave an overall ‘clean’ aesthetic, and performance quality to the shoe.
To champion these original innovations and celebrate the re-launch, the savvy trainer brand have teamed up with YCN (You Can Now) to create a series of visuals, contemporising the sporting roots of this iconic street symbol.
Three innovative illustrators have taken on board the life of the Superstar, to come up with imagery that brings to life the history of the basketball trainer. The three images focus on one each of the key elements of the shoe design, sharing an art deco feel, using solid colours – oranges, black, whites, reds to bring out the heritage of the Superstar shoe.
Knoxville born illustrator, Lauren Rolwing, who has worked for the New York Times and Harper’s Bazaar, has created ‘Shelltoe: Jostling in the key’. London based Jack Hughes’ eerie and sublime atmosphere has created ‘Herringbone Sole: Cleaning the court’, whilst Swiss YEHTEH, aka Philipp Dornbierer’s, delicate style has come up with ‘Mixed Materials: Out the box’.
