Wow this is infectious stuff. Sweet melodies bubbling over killer keyboard hooks from the delightful Auckland based indie songstress Princess Chelsea.
It all sounds so sugary cute but then the little barbs in her words start to strike like tiny pieces of ice on a hot summer’s day. They pierce through the harmony.
The video backs it all up nicely. This is no big budget, trumped up affair and has obviously been organised on a shoestring but it all works in a deliberately naive kind of way. There’s her, lots of dry ice and a cat makes an appearance. You can hear the pop mastery that we know and love from the eighties wrapped up in the music but this is not the simple mimicry you often hear. There are snatches of Soft Cell and Human League but also Bats for Lashes in there too. This has a strong sense of itself though and Princess Chelsea’s spirit is very much of the now and shines through.
Too Many People by Princess Chelsea is out now. Her new album The Great Cybernetic Depression was out last week and she played some London dates recently. She’s definably one to watch if you like you pop deliciously spikey as well as infectious.
