Lucha Libre: Mexican Wrestling hits London

Mythical masks, high-flying manoeuvres, flamboyant skin-tight body suits, catapulting bodies and lots of Good vs Evil pzazz. The spectacle of Mexican wrestling is coming to London this month for “The Greatest Spectacle of Lucha Libre”. And we have two pairs of tickets to giveaway to let you experience the breath-taking Luchadores for yourselves.

The history of Mexican wrestling dates back to 1863, developing through the early 1900s until the emergence of television transformed what became known as ‘Lucha Libre’ (free fighting) into a national pop-culture phenomenon. In 1942, a silver-masked wrestler, known as El Santo (The Saint) made his debut in Mexico City and the public were captivated. Santo quickly rose to be the most popular luchador in Mexico, with a career spanning nearly five decades. He became a folk hero and a symbol of justice appearing in comic books and movies.

Fast forward, and Mexico’s iconic legends and masked superheroes will gather in the UK to perform in “The Greatest Spectacle of Lucha Libre”, an electrifying three-day extravaganza at London’s York Hall in Bethnal Green from 9th – 11th July 2015. Starring the finest Mexican fighters, alongside fighters from Bolivia and the UK, the weekend will also feature wild Cabaret acts, authentic Mexican street-food and Agave cocktails.

Over the three days, York Hall will be transformed into a retro-style Mexican Arena, transporting the audience to a time when the legendary El Santo, Mil Mascaras, Cavernario Galindo, Black Shadow and Gory Guerrero starred in epic live confrontations of Good vs. Evil. Each day will feature different shows with a massive Grand Finale, and a raucous Friday night cabaret spectacular – for a strictly adult audience. All this will be accompanied by carnival dancers, cabaret and authentic Mexican street-food accompanied by feisty agave cocktails, tequila shots, and a special edition Lucha Libre beer.

The spectacles will be headlined by Mexico’s greatest luchador, the silver masked El Hijo del Santo (The Son of The Saint) along with a stellar line-up of luchadores who have graced Mexico’s finest rings and international wrestling leagues. The shows also present for the very first time in Europe ‘The Fighting Cholitas of Bolivia’, and the UK’s own Lucha Libre stars, the high-flying heroes of ‘Lucha Britannia’.

As a preview to the 3-day spectacle, a special screening will take place at the nearby Oval Space in Bethnal Green premiering two Lucha Libre documentaries. The first film, “El Hombre detrás de la máscara” will be followed by a Q&A session with El Hijo del Santo & Gabriela Obregón (Producer), and the second film, “Mamachas del Ring” will be followed by a Q&A with Carmen Rosa and Betty M. Park (Director) plus a conversation with ‘The Queen of the Ring’ Cassandro El Exótico.

The Greatest Spectacle of Lucha Libre takes place from 8 to 11 July 2015 at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, E2 9PJ. For further information on Lucha Libre, or to buy tickets please visit www.luchalibreworld.co.uk.
