The rally drive of a lifetime at Goodwood Festival of Speed – words Alan Woods
I knew that the Goodwood Festival of Speed looked like a great bet for petrol heads but this short film shows us just how much of an adrenalin ride it can be.
It takes us on an adventure with Paul Wallace from Supercars of London and Sam from Seen Through Glass as they get to go on a thrill ride which is a lot more than they expected.
They get to meet some of the biggest names in motorsport. These are real heroes of tarmac and mud including Rally legend Mikko Hirvonen, Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen and Motorcycle legend Freddie Spencer.
How do you think you’d cope behind the wheel of one of those extreme driving machines? It really is tight in there. Sam gets stuck in inside the Audi R18 which Tom Kristensen won Le Mans. After they let him out he has a game of rock, paper scissors to see which of them will get to go on the ride of a life time with rally driver Mikko Hirvonen.
Sam wins out. He gets to ride alongside Mikko in full rally mode over hill, dale and through forest. His face just before they set off as Mikko is revving up the car is quite a picture. He looks real nervous. They drive right on the edge with all the bumps, mid airs thrills and slides you’d expect from one of the world’s greatest rally drivers. Sam relaxes and learns to love the experience.
Once he’s recovered, Sam and Pail then get to meet Motorcycle Legend Freddie Spencer AKA Fast Freddie. The American is a former world champion and recognised as one of the sport’s greatest ever riders.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed has been running since 1993 and offers the chance to experience some of the greatest thrills possible each year on 2 and 4 wheels. Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 is next.
