The top Lake Tahoe attractions to keep in mind during an upcoming holiday

words Alexa Wang

Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake within North America and it is also by far one of the most famous. While its history can be traced back to Native American tribes such as the Washoe, it was not until the latter half of the 19th century when this lake began to be considered a tourist attraction.

It is now estimated that more than three million tourists visit Lake Tahoe every year and this number is expected to increase over time. Still, we need to remember that the sheer size of this lake (more than 191 square miles) signifies that planning ahead is always a good idea. What are some of the most well-known Lake Tahoe attractions and what time of year is the best to visit? Each of these questions will be discussed below.

Lake Tahoe attractions

1. Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park is ranked as the number-one tourist attraction by many online travel portals, and for good reason. Ideal for individuals as well as families, this park offers stunning views of the entire lake as well as daily hiking itineraries. There are also numerous spots to enjoy a picnic and camping is permitted within certain areas.

2. Squaw Valley

Are you an avid skier? If so, be sure to include Squaw Valley in your itinerary. Dubbed one of the finest skiing destinations in North America, Squaw Valley offers more than 4,000 acres of trails designed for both children and adults. This location was also the home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, so you will definitely be impressed with what it has to offer.

3. Lake Tahoe Boat and Tours

It is always wise to obtain an up-close-and-personal view of the lake during your stay. Thankfully, boat rental in Lake Tahoe will provide you with a host of vessels to select. You may also choose to see the lake from above. In this case (and if you are not afraid of heights), a guided helicopter tour will offer up amazing results. These tours are available during the spring, summer and early autumn. As tours are very popular, make reservations well in advance.

4. Kings Beach

There are numerous beaches to enjoy and Kings Beach is one of the largest. This family-friendly location is set within 13 acres of woodlands and it is found along the northern shore of Lake Tahoe. Picnic areas, playgrounds, baby changing facilities, and washrooms are all found nearby.

When is it Best to Visit?

Thankfully, Lake Tahoe can be visited throughout the year (depending upon your holiday desires). Spring and summer are ideal for aquatic activities while late autumn and winter are suited for skiing and snowboarding. However, it could be wise to avoid the Christmas season; prices can be quite high and many hotels are fully occupied.

In terms of Americana, Lake Tahoe certainly lives up to its reputation. We can now understand why so many tourists make this their destination each and every year.
