MATZU for Evisu – Jeans as Pop Art

by Fiona Shaw

A pair of jeans is one of those essential fashion items that is taken for granted by the many. You reach for your old favourites that have become almost part of you with age. These old friends go with almost anything else in your wardrobe and you pull them on without so much as a second thought.

But maybe it’s time for jeans to step into the limelight for a change. Step forward Tomokazu Matsuyama, or Matzu to his friends, the New York based Japanese artist who has designed the MATZU for Evisu Limited Edition Box Set in collaboration with the denim brand. He’s basically turned jeans into individual pieces of pop art. The slim fit, unwashed selvage denim features a bold and witty yellow polka dot design coupled with a more subtle tonal teardrop shaped paisley. The result is a pair of jeans that steps out of the shadows and makes its bid for stardom.

Each pair comes in its own wooden box etched with Matsuyama’s renowned motif of a Kirin a mythical creature that’s half-dragon, half-Giraffe. The jeans are individually wrapped in traditional Japanese packaging, an elaborate gift wrapping process with furoshiki cloth in various shades of blue. The collaboration celebrates Evisu’s 20th anniversary – “20 Years of Making Rules; 20 Years of Premium Denim“.

Every pair of MATZU jeans comes with a special Japanese fan printed with Matsuyama’s elaborated Kirin graphic on the front and a detailed timeline of Evisu’s 20 years on the back. MATZU For Evisu Jeans – Limited Edition Box Set are available now at Evisu flagship Boxpark store and www.evisu.com
