Fire Records release Opossoms ‘Fly’ – 50s Sc-Fi Video

by Daniel Lennard

This video for Opossom’s latest release ‘Fly’ on Fire Records is like a 1950s sci-fi B movie – full of mad scientists and their futuristic machines. There’s a strange unearthly pyramid involved and our heroines stride around sort of like low rent clockwork dolls. All seriously good fun and it helps the song do its stuff as all good videos should.

The song is great too. The rolling drum rhythms and sparse arrangements topped by dreamy girl vocals really works well coupled with a great line in intriguing lyrics. Sounds modern and forward looking but with hints of classic girl pop from the fifties or sixties floating above.

The Sci-fi video was filmed by Sam Kristofski on New Zealand’s South Island. Frontman Kody Nielson describes the “Fly” video like this:
“This clip follows a group of scientists as they attempt to study a mysterious moving pyramid in the country. They move human looking robots around by remote control to get in closer to it. As they investigate they discover a UFO. Sam Kristofski filmed this clip for ‘Fly’ in the South Island of New Zealand. He also made the previous Opossom clip for ‘Blue Meanies’.”

The track is taken from their new album ‘Electric Hawaii’ which is full of slightly wobbly pop that’s fresh and direct with some rhythmic wizardry underpinning the whole shebang. Opossom has been dreamt up by Kody Nielson who used to be in the band Mint Chicks alongside his brother. With Opossom he wanted to create a multi-layered pop experience taking elements from many eras and genres from surf rock to ancient electronica and with aspects of light and dark. In our opinion he succeeds and the album should go down very well when it’s launched later this year.

‘Electric Hawaii’ is out on Fire Records click here on 6th August.
