Spooky and brooding with great pop hooks and that’s just the music – the video for ‘Seeing in the Dark’ adds atmosphere and the animated elements that hover and move across the video really help to take you somewhere else. Sometimes they resemble ghostly hands that are trying to repeatedly grab hold of the singer.
‘Seeing in the Dark’ is from Mothlite’s new album ‘Dark Age’ the follow up to ‘The Flax Of Reverie’ their last album released back in 2008 and is getting some rave reviews. It’s an intense journey into O’Sullivan’s obsessions – his loves and fears.
There are some great and refreshingly jarring influences here such as Kate Bush, Black and Tears for Fears. The melodic nature of the tracks though have a dark and brittle backdrop that’s been dipped in the industrial fluids shared by DAF, The Cure & Sisters of Mercy tinged with some hardcore punk. O’Sullivan himself describes Dark Age as “Dark megalomania, contradictions and paradoxes, and general bleakness.”
There’s a pop brain at work here though and so it’s all delivered with a punch and immediacy that smacks you around the chops with melodies and lyrics that bite.
“If it was too bleak, with melancholy overriding the whole thing, then I’d counteract it with a huge chorus or huge hook.”
‘Seeing in the Dark’ is the latest single from the new album ‘Dark Age’ and O’Sullivan will be touring the material with his new band later in the year.
