Founded by husband and wife team Jim and Chloe Read, British brand Newgate are renowned for their innovative, design-led timepieces. Their iconic clocks have been gracing trendsetting interiors across the globe for several decades. The launch of an avant-garde watch collection sees Newgate translate their clock expertise into a contemporary timepiece for the wrist for women and men.
Newgate was launched when Jim was ‘asked to leave’ art school in his late teens and Chloe left her business degree to focus on creating their start-up – the pair funded the beginnings of the Newgate empire with the sale of Jim’s vintage Mini Moke car, using the proceeds to invest in framing equipment to reframe vintage prints.
The quirk in fate came when they chanced across a box of old clock movements at a flea market, and began incorporating the mechanisms into vintage frames to create quirky, large-scale decorative clocks. “At the time everyone was producing very small, ordinary, functional clocks”, says Jim Read, “we started doing something very different – that everyone at the time told us wouldn’t work!”
Moving on a pace, the Blip watch collection features utilitarian green and blue canvas, or caramel suede straps paired with slim vintage stainless steel cases and minimalist marker dials to create great autumnal colour options. Brown leather straps paired with vintage brass cases celebrate this season’s must-have metallic finish. As a dressier option, black leather or mesh stainless steel bracelet styles create a refined evening look, available in either cream or ‘reverse’ black dials.

Creative director Jim Read described his approach to the design process. “In creating all our collections I am always inspired by Great British design. I love the smartness, the quality, and the understated cool and elegance that British design stands for. I try to bring that same aesthetic into all of my designs.”
