PONY & Ricky Powell Capsule Collection
Summer ’12
Ricky Powell has given us some of the images that have defined the world of rap and hip-hop. He famously blagged himself onto the Raising Hell Tour Bus back in 1985 with up and coming hip hop acts The Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. He has been using that guile and wit ever since to document acts including LL Cool J and Madonna. Born and raised in New York, his work has been published in The New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, The Village Voice, Mass Appeal, Time, Wax Poetics, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone & Grand Royal.
Now Ricky has joined forces with Pony to collaborate on two new lines of Vintage Slamdunk sneakers, t-shirts and accessories. The Vintage Slamdunks are rather tasty looking shoes that fit in with Ricky’s own attitude.
“My newest sneaker, with Pony… celebrates their 40th Anniversary. I really like the sneaker and they happen to be ‘Animal Friendly… they’re canvas, a thick canvas and that pleases me, a lot.. I’m really looking forward to the jump off with them.”
The mid-top Vintage Slamdunks will be available in navy and feature Ricky’s own unique style including his famous dog walker image on the insole. The shoes also feature Pony’s 40 Year anniversary logo motif seen across the Ricky Powell collaboration, and the tongue lining is signed off with the ‘The Rickford Institute’ logo.
“I sometimes would think of how I would run a school of thought, an attitude, a philosophy if I were the The ‘Prez’… It would have a somewhat unconventional / non-traditional curriculum and format… As for the ‘style of this school’ individualism is encouraged, as well as good man-ners, mutual respect… Just acting right, in chill mode.”
