The sleepy village of Koskenkorva making waves with its vodka – words Andre Walhberg
The village of Koskenkorva in Finland cannot boast glistening lakes or vast forests. This promotional video may have an epic soundtrack but try as they might it just doesn’t stack up.
There is no vivid nightlife, no supermodels, nor world class rappers I’m afraid here. They do have one thing though that might just peek your interest. They have an award winning vodka that they make here that is a product of the simple but bountiful countryside that surrounds the village.
They have fields of top quality barley and lots of crystal clear water in abundance. The master distillers Koskenkorva have developed a world leading vodka that has amassed many awards along the way.
Their latest development Sauna Barrel is quite daring. It’s a rather innovative new take on vodka inspired by the smoky heat of an old smoke sauna on the centre of the village. This takes the idea of flavoured vodka into a whole new realm. It has the smooth but complex taste of a bourbon with undercurrents of oak and the round balanced taste of a quality vodka. It is bound to create a stir and ruffle some feathers amongst purists.
Who would have though such an unassuming village would be creating such waves with its bold innovations? Well the rest of us can just sit back and enjoy the drink.
